Something unpleasant occurred to put dark shadows in her eyes. Of that, he was certain. “Why won’t you talk to me?”

Elspeth twisted to the side and glanced at him from beneath her lashes. “Is that not what I have been doing?”

“No, you haven’t. You’ve been skirting whatever upset you.” Finn’s hands curled into fists at his sides. Why wouldn’t she confide in him?

“Are you really going to marry the jerk?”

“Jerk?”

“Alexander.”

“I must.” Elspeth refused to look at Finn directly. Her hands—she tried to hide them—trembled.

“Why won’t you tell me what happened last night?”

Elspeth’s sad gaze flicked to him briefly before she lowered her head. “Nothing happened you need to ken.”
